Hello and Bula! I’m Alena Sorokiwaqa (Lena), an ESL teacher at Free Bird Institute for 8 years. Learning English in Fiji is a truly unique experience. Our students enjoy interactive classes with role plays, games, and discussions, while also practicing English every day in real-life situations. Surrounded by Fiji’s warm culture and stunning environment, they not only improve quickly but also build international friendships and unforgettable memories.

Living and learning far from home is not always easy, but I want you to know that this dorm is not just a place to sleep—it’s your second home. Here, we grow together, support each other, and respect one another like family.My door is always open if you need help, advice, or even just someone to listen. Remember, you are never alone in this journey. Stay focused on your studies, take care of yourselves, and don’t forget to enjoy the little moments along the way.

異国の地での生活は大変に思うこともあるかもしれません。でも、この寮を第二の家のように思ってもらえたら嬉しいです。ここではみんなが家族のようにお互いを支え合って生活しています。困ったときに限らず、ただ話を聞いてほしいだけでも、いつでも気軽に声をかけてください。この寮ではあなたは決して一人ではありません。一生懸命勉強し、健康を大切にし、そして小さなことでも楽しむ心を忘れずに。

My time at Freebird has taught me patience, calmness, understanding, and the importance of embracing different cultures with an open and loving heart. My best advice for learning English is “Don’t rush”. Progress may seem slow at times, but remember, “Rome was not built in a day.” Patience and persistence will lead to success. Appreciate every step of your journey and celebrate every achievement along the way.

フリーバードでの経験は、忍耐力、冷静さ、理解力、そして大きな心で異なる文化を受け入れることの大切さを教えてくれました。英語学習における私の最大のアドバイスは「急がないこと」です。成長は時に遅く感じられるかもしれませんが、「ローマは一日にして成らず」ということを忘れないでください。忍耐と継続が成功へと導きます。あらゆる一歩を大切にし、その過程での小さな達成を祝福しましょう。

Language learning can be challenging and takes time so it is important to stay positive. Always be patient, keep a positive attitude and you will definitely improve!

Bula and Hello, I joined Freebird in September 2025 as Chief Operations Officer/ Principal. I come from a teaching and Business management background and I enjoy meeting and socializing with new and old souls. I am very excited to learn about Japanese culture and people and also impart some Fijian culture to the Japanese people- perhaps over Fishing or watching a game of Rugby 7s on television. I’m KAORI, a Japanese counselor. I was a Freebird student and fell in love with Fiji and returned as a staff member. Studying abroad in Fiji not only teaches you English, but also gives you the opportunity to meet wonderful teachers and new people, learn about new culture, and grow as a person. Although Fiji is not a developed country like Japan, it is full of nature and happiness. Many students fall in love with Fiji’s nature, warmth, and happiness.
